Whether you are moving across town or across the country it can be costly. Unless you have a big enough truck and can move everything yourself, there is going to be expenses involved. The problem with this is that not everyone has the extra money to pay for moving expenses. Knowing how to get moving assistance when you don’t have money can be helpful.
Those who do not have money and need to move should consider their options. They will still most likely need help, which means they need to consider other ways to help get their items moved that don’t necessarily involve paying for it. There are other ways to get moved that don’t include money, but you will have to resort to some of the options below to make it happen.
Getting Moving Assistance
When you know you need to move and you do not have money to spend on making it happen you need to consider other options. The first step to take is to consider what you will need help with to make the move a successful one.
Some things you will need in order to move include:
Boxes –These you can usually get for free at the grocery store or by posting online and asking if anyone is giving away boxes. While there are moving boxes that are for sale, you do not have to purchase boxes to move. You can almost always get free boxes from neighbors, from community members online, curb alerts, and from the local grocery store. Call or stop at your grocery store in the morning and ask them if you could get some free boxes. They always have some available, because they get a lot of them as they put merchandize on the shelf. They may tell you they will save some up that day and you can return to get them, but you should be able to get plenty of free boxes from your local stores.
Packing Assistance – Some people are healthy enough to pack all of their things on their own. However, there are plenty of people who struggle in this area and will need some physical assistance getting their household items packed up. If you don’t have money to pay someone to help, you will need to find some volunteers that can help you with this. If you are elderly, reach out to your local council on aging to see if they have volunteers who can help. Otherwise, you can ask for local high school students who need to earn volunteer credit hours, a local scouting group who may want to earn a community service badge, or other volunteers who want to be of assistance to people in their community. Friends and family may also be willing to volunteer their time, too.
Physical Loading Help – When it comes to the most physically difficult aspect of moving, most people would agree that it is loading the items into a moving truck. The nature of the work can be difficult for many people, because the boxes and furniture is heavy and challenging to lift. Just as with the packing assistance, you will need to ask for volunteers. Elderly people can contact the council on aging to inquire about volunteers, while veterans can contact their local VFW hall or VA center. Others will need to post online, ask around to neighbors, and reach out to those who may be happy to volunteer or who need to earn community service hours. There are always people willing to help with this type of thing, especially if they can earn volunteer hours that they may need for school, work, or other requirements they have to meet.
Moving Truck or Trailer – If you own a truck or trailer that can be used for moving your things that is great. It is one less thing you will need to obtain for moving without having money. If you don’t have one readily available, you will need to get one, unless you can fit everything into your smaller vehicle and make numerous trips back and forth. But to move everything at once, you will need a decent size truck or trailer that everything can be loaded into. If you don’t have the money to rent a moving truck, you could ask to borrow the money from someone, or offer some sort of trade. Perhaps they pay for the truck and you provide a different service or item of value to cover the exchange. Other options include calling organizations in the area to see if they would offer this type of free service, asking friends and family if they have a truck or trailer that can be used for moving, etc. You can also contact your local churches to see if they can help.
Once you get things moved to the new location you will also need help unloading the truck. Hopefully the same people who helped load it will be able to unload if it is a local move. If it is not, then you will need to find people on the other end in that location that can be of assistance helping you to unload the truck or trailer. If you don’t know people at the new location or city, reach out to local organizations and churches for help.
Another great resource for all of the help you may need moving are local churches. There are many local churches around the country and they are usually open to helping people who don’t have money and are in need of assistance. Inquire with each of them to see if they can be of any assistance helping you make the move. The people in their congregation may be willing to offer physical assistance, a truck or trailer, and help with packing. They may also be willing to take up a donation to gather money that can be used to help you with moving, including renting a truck, and paying people to help with the loading and unloading of your belongings.
